Secret Pearl Jam Show

Quietly, a leak regarding a secret Pearl Jam show at the very intimate Irving Plaza in New York City found itself on my lap this past Wednesday. At the Tower Records on 4th and Broadway on May 2nd, a lucky 450 Pearl Jam fans that purchase their new self-titled disk that drops at midnight, will get one free ticket to the show. By Thursday people were already lining up outside, ready to make home on the sidewalk. I of course, spirit a chance at such an idea – having Eddie Vedder spit on my face. I’ve been walking around this weekend with a permanent hard on thinking about it. But the show being on May 5th means I’ll be out of the state, so I won’t be able to attend. Nevertheless, 450 dedicated Pearl Jam fans that have been camping out since Wednesday will get to see a personal rock show.
Saturday, there was an anti-war march in downtown Manhattan. I regret to think about the Pearl Jam fans sitting outside the Tower Records waiting for a chance at a free concert ticket, when they could’ve been supporting the march. I’m sure Eddie Vedder would’ve opted for a different weekend. I bet many of the fans contemplated whether or not they should be in the line or in the march. I know - it’s a tough decision. Tens of thousands of people showed up to protest the war. I think the message was sent, regardless of those Pearl Jam fans. No sweat!

Thursday Live @ Toads Place, New Haven, CT 6/27

Thursday never fails to please me live. What can I say but this show was absolutely amazing, wild and sweaty. And for the first time ever I went crowd surfing - almost as exhilarating as sex. The boys started off the show with "Understanding in a Car Crash" and went through old tracks and new tracks. A perfect hour and half mix. They played about 3 new songs from their new CD "A City By The Light Divided" which comes out this Tuesday. "This song is off our E.P, Don't go buy it, just go steal it and download it. You guys are honest with us, so we are gonna be honest with you! Don't go pay for this fucking thing!" That was Geoff sounding off about "Jet Black New Year."

The energy these guys put out is unlike any other live act I've ever seen before. I'm seeing Thursday again on Tuesday night in NYC and I only expect Thursday to top themselves. Here is a video (with no sound, sorry!) of Geoff spinning the mike above the crowd:

thanks to erika for the nice pics and vid ;)

Dredg live @ Avalon, NYC 4.21.06

Dredg played last night at the Avalon in New York City - which, if you didn't know, is inside a church. Cool huh? Ours were the openers, but I only got to see a song of theirs but it sounded fantastic. Dredg came out with a full 2 hour set, playing songs from their latest album "Catch Without Arms" and their 2nd album "El Cielo." As brilliant as Dredg sounds on record, with all their experimentation and background voices and distortions, they pulled of a magnificent performance of each song. Absolutely stunning! Besides the two fucking idiots standing in front of me, the show was spectacular. The highlight was the show closer with an old track from "Leitmotif." Although Dredg didn't play an encore, they did something I had never seen before. They played their last song, while the drummer kept drumming and playing piano, while the tech crew dismantled his drum set. He played till he had no instruments left. AND I caught a drum stick...go me! He must've thrown out about 10 drum sticks, hit people in the face and shit...it was great

And i saw this spray pained on the side of the road...I didn't do it, trust me!

Matthew Good - Live @ Club Infinity, Buffalo, NY 4/07/06

Matthew Good might be the most influential musician that you've never even heard of. His music, from the beginning of his days with the Matthew Good Band, up till his most recent music, writing and political activism, has been very influential - and crucially necessary - in my life. He hails from Canada and dares to step foot in America (Buffalo being the farthest). I had tickets to see him and his band play in Buffalo back in October but skipped out...This time around he came solo with just his guitar and he was truly magnificent. Worth the 6 hour drive.

Here he is playing with an Anne Couture doll

Throughout his 2 hour show, which included a 5 song encore (the crowd yelled "K-I-C-K-A-S-S That's the way we spell success!) and a few readings from "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Guide," shitty writing from bigot Anne Couture's awful book and an article from the New York Times about Bush leaking wiretapped information, where he commented "How does this guy not get impeached?" I stayed glued, mezmerized by his ability to hit every chord perfectly on songs throughout his 10 year career. Here is a video I took of him covering Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" with special guest opener - and dreamy - Melissa McClelland. (this video is not the best, but it's all I could get)

Melissa McClelland was phenomenal as well, coming out with a mini-keyboard, reminding me of acoustic Talking Heads. Here's a picture of her lovely self:

Won't you be mine...
